How to Drive Traffic to Your Facebook Page

You’ve gotten your new Facebook (FB) Business Page set up. You have designed a cover (851 x 315 pixels) and a profile thumbnail (180 x 180 pixels) and uploaded them. You’ve set up Permissions, Settings and an Info page. You have a few “Like’s” from your friends and family but aren’t really getting much response from your fans.

You’re ready to build your Facebook fan audience and (hopefully) convert some of your fans to customers. How do you get started getting your target customer groups to find and “Like” your FB Business Page, thus becoming Facebook Fans?

Here are some of the strategies (and secrets) the social media marketing professionals use to build FB Business Page audiences.

How to Drive Traffic to Your FB Business Page

Use these tactics to invite and entice your target customers to visit your FB Business Page. Some of them may seem obvious but are often overlooked.

1. Social Plug-Ins. Add FB social plug-ins to your website, blog and other social media accounts (i.e. Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, foursquare, etc.) A social plug-in is a “button” that, when clicked, will link the user to the intended social media landing page. Social plug-ins should be visible from every page on your website, blog and social media platforms; it should be placed as close to the top of your pages as possible.

2. Share Buttons.Add Facebook Share buttons to pages on your website and blog, and links to and from various social media platforms. Share buttons allow a user to post your content to their social media pages and therefore share with their friends, family, followers, fans and subscribers. A Facebook Share Button will help draw new fans to your FB Page.

3. Ask Friends and Family. If you haven’t already, ask your friends and family members to “Like” your new FB Business Page and to ask their network of friends and families to visit and share your new page to their networks. You’d be surprised at how many people this “ripple effect” can reach.  Of course, you don't want to do this often, but most friends and family will be happy to help when you start your FB Business Page.

4. Email List.Send an email out to your current email list of past and current customers, asking them to help you out by “Liking” your page and sharing your new page with their networks.

5. Email Signature.Add a social plugin or FB Badge to your email signature to make it easy to be found.

6. Facebook URL. Add your FB Button URL to your offline marketing materials.

7. Facebook Page QR Code for Online Marketing. Create a QR Code for your FB Business Page and add to online mapping and directory listings. (See Online Mapping.) You can use them as part of an email signature and even as your social media avatar.

8. QR Code for Offline Marketing. Use your Facebook QR Code on offline marketing publications. I’ve seen them on business cards, brochures, window signs, product labels, car magnets and other marketing materials.

9. Facebook Advertising.I have seen amazing results from Facebook Ads but I have heard from colleagues they are not always as effective as one might hope. The best way to use them is to create several different ads and change them up often (even daily) to avoid boredom. Be sure to measure the results of different ads to test effectiveness.

10. Facebook Promotions Groups. Sign up for the Social Media Marketing Group in LinkedIn and reciprocate “Likes” with other businesses that are somehow related or within your geographic area. The way these “trading” groups work is that you “Like” and post on the other business’ FB Page and they agree to “Like” your Page in return. If someone from the group “Likes” and posts on your page you need to reciprocate. There are other “promotion” groups in many social networking associations; look for ones that are in your industry or niche.

11. Facebook Search.Use the Search function in Facebook to look for related FB Business Pages; "Like" them and invite them to "LIke" your FB Page in return, thus expanding each of your networks.

12. Like Services.Try Facebook “Liking” services such as FBLikesYou or HitsLikeYou. These are free services that help to match people interested in your services with your business.

13. Learn from Others. Review successful FB Pages in your industry (or in general) to see if you can discover what is working for them.

14. Measure Your Results. Measure and analyze your traffic using Google Analytics (available once you have 30 fans.) This will help you test and adjust your tactics based on what’s working and what’s not.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the comments! Raj, I looked at your Facebook Page! You already have over 15,000 Likes! If you are not gaining enough engagement or traction for your nonprofit, I would highly suggest a website and a blog. Vibrant can offer you a very nice website that you can easily manage for a reasonable price. Think of it this way. Your social media accounts are designed to raise awareness for your brand (or your cause.) But then people want more information about the organization so they look for a website. If you don't have a website, they are left wondering about your mission, your team, your activities and your clients. If you are doing advocacy efforts, you need a way to communicate about your work and demonstrate your credibility. Your website can really help with this. I directed a nonprofit for 17 years so I have a lot of experience in that area. Let me know if you're interested - let's talk!
